RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

Odd that when I was commuting and working the weeks seemed to crawl by but now that I am at home they zap past at the speed of light.   Cannot believe that it is Friday already.

I am off up to London in about an hour or so as it is my Friday for collecting Florence from school and that is always a joy especially when she sees me and she rushes over beaming and shouting Grandma!  I now stay overnight on my Fridays so that daughter and husband can nip out in the evening for a bit and have a break while I watch the slumbering children.  I tend to nip up and check on them every half hour even though there is a baby monitor and Helen says it is not necessary, but it is my watch and I feel better if I check on them regularly. Yes, and all grandparents will understand why I place a hand on each of their backs to make sure they are breathing….

On Wednesday I went to a taster session of Nordic Walking which was held in a country park in the middle of Colchester. It was a warm autumn day with sun shining and perfect for walking. Very friendly bunch of people,
Nordic walkinggood instruction and have decided to sign up for a course as I really really need a bit more exercise. Bit more actually is a bit of a lie as you cannot have a bit more of nothing which is what I am doing at the moment.   About 45 mins walk and my lack of fitness certainly showed up next day when I ached all over and my back very stiff and painful though I think that might be more to do with clearing out the blocked rain drains in our car park than walking.   We walk in all weathers I understand so out with my waterproof and my walking shoes which still have the soil of Bodmin Moor on the soles have been dragged out of the cupboard.   I shall let you know how I get on.

Started reading the Richard Burton diaries this week which Yale UP kindly sent me, it is now out in paperback, and it is riveting reading and so immediate and alive. It is a thick doorstopper of a book but I can see that I will be glued to the pages over the next few days.   Hava happily abandoned several other reads to concentrate on this, one of which is the latest Inspector Lynley, also a huge doorstopper and 200 pages in but am already rapidly losing the will to live.

And, finally, to let you know that the Felixstowe Book Festival is set for the end of June next year.   After some doubt the Orwell Hotel is happy to have us back so it is all systems go and I will keep you updated re speakers etc one of which will be my daughter!

Back tomorrow and over the weekend will regale you with my thoughts on Strictly Come Dancing, there's something to look forward to….

Do hope you enjoy Nordic walking! I discovered it while while we were home for a couple of years and loved it. Need to find a new community here.

    Thanks for your reply, Elaine!

Won’t be writing about it Lisa as I have given up on it. Was going off it a bit halfway through series 3 and now, after last week, have had enough

So far they are proving fascinating and loving the ordinariness of the domestic life RB and ET led most of the time. Not all glitz and diamonds and it is rather touching

Having the poles is a tremendous help and you would not think so just looking at them, but halfway up a fill, the instructor told us to life up our poles and walk the rest of the way not using them. The difference is immense!

Neither do I! But i suppose because I have read them all I am under some dreadful compulsion to carry on.

Joan – I have read about 150 pages of the latest and am not sure I can carry on with it at the moment so have put it to one side. Simply cannot understand why she is so verbose. And Lynely remains a crashng bore

They are held behind you so that is not possible. I really enjoyed my taster session

I will be curious to read your thoughts on the current season of “Downton Abbey”. :)

I treated myself to the Richard Burton diaries. It’s a shame there are missing years early on. I found an old theatre programme from 1948 the other day for The Lady’s not for Burning – which he starred in, but no entries in the diaries sadly. I know I’ll love reading them though. Good luck with the walking.

I’d love to know how you get on with the Nordic walking, and how it compares to the usual non-Nordic variety. It looks and sounds interesting, and is supposed top be good for hills and difficult terrains but, as Margaret said, I’d be worried about getting tangled up with the poles, and could I manage those, as well as a backpack and a camera, or would I drop something or fall over…

I totally agree about the Lynley books. I have no idea why I keep reading them.

The Nordic walking sounds like something I’d enjoy, but I don’t like group anythings.
And why does Elizabeth George feel compelled to write such incredibly long Lynley books?! I love Lynley and Havers, but I cringe at the thought of slogging through 800 or so pages. Does she get paid by the word? Seems like they get longer every year.

Have a great weekend, enjoy the granddaughters, but ooh, Nordic walking … I don’t think I’d be able to manage those poles … I’d just trip over them!
