RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

OK am starting this off by saying that I adore the Queen, I am a staunch royalist and think she does a superb job and would quite happily march anybody who says otherwise off to the Tower via Traitor's Gate.    So hope that is quite clear.   Great tea party yesterday and will be posting about that another day but for today I am writing about the BBC and its coverage of yesterday's River Pageant.   I am happy to see that I am not a lone voice in the wilderness in my opinion of their efforts.

Well, here we go.  It was DIRE, UTTERLEY UTTERLEY DIRE. It was also vacuous and ill informed.  I gather Nelson was at Waterloo, the Queen is addressed as Her Royal Highness, and the little ships on the river who went to Dunkirk, went there 'after D-Day'.   We were told the length of the barge in feet and then, hastily, we were told what it was in metres.  Glad I was told that as I had been wondering.

The pageant started and off went the Queen to the main barge beaming and smiling. Straight back to the studio where Matt Baker and some blonde female were there in full witter mode and they spoke to a 'historian' sitting next to them and asked what she thought it all represented.   After she had told us and cannot remember a word of it, we went back to the pageant. The pattern was set for the afternoon – every time there was something interesting going on the BBC honed in on one of its presenters along the route.  John Sargeant beaming at us all and Richard E Grant reading the poem On Westminster Bridge.   While he read it the pageant continued.  Over to Clare Balding whose words were totally drowned out by a barge's hooter (I cheered); back to the studio where somebody told us Matt Pinsent was in the rowing boat, Ben Fogle was in another and apropos of their rowing the Atlantic last year naked, we were told that this time 'we hope they have some clothes on'. Oh how I laughed… It also goes without saying that when the barge containing the Middletons went by we had the usual 'OOOOH There's Pippa'. Rest of the family were described as 'oh and there's Pippa's dad and brother'………..pass the sick bag.

Then, shock horror, over to Tess Daly in Hyde Park who did her usual shrieking of banalities down the microphone while dancing the jive and wearing a pancake with feathers on her head all at the same time.   By this stage I was beginning to count the number of Strictly Come Dancing contestants who were popping up and praying fervently that we would not get Anne bloody Widdicombe. Thankfully we were spared that horror.   Over to Annika Rice on Millennium Bridge talking about art and prancing about.   Then we saw a bit more of the pageant.

Not ashamed to say that when I saw the flotilla with the barge behind it on my full screen at home, I welled up.   It was simply glorious and I loved it.

BACK to the studio and then we hopped over to a Beeb boat on the Thames and there were Maureen Lipman, Griff Rhys Jones, an Iranian comic whose name I cannot remember or spell, and Sandy Toksvig below decks and burbling. WHY? WHY did the BBC think we were remotely interested in anything they had to say?

And then the summing up. Matt Baker turned to the 'historian' and asked her what she thought. 'Oh My god that was, like, amazing'.   I have A level history and I would have quite happily said that for half her fee. Let's face it, I would have done it for a Jubilee Mug.  Out of all the 'historians' the BBC had tucked away in their broom cupboard they pulled out one who was totally useless.   Wish I could remember her name so that I can keep a weather eye out for her on future shows and make sure I don't watch them……….

I could go on and on but think I had better stop now.  Time was when the BBC was the station that everyone turned to as The Authority on such occasions and, indeed, for years this has been the case.  ITV did not even bother attempting to cover any of it knowing when they were beaten, but last year they covered the Wedding, suspending all advertising for the day.  Half an hour of the BBC last April and I switched over to ITV and there I stayed, utterley charmed and amused by the lovely way it was done. Solemn when they should be solemn, funny when they should be funny and generally, invoking the spirit of the day.   I note that they are broadcasting the Service of Thanksgiving and the Carriage Drive tomorrow and I shall be there.

I have been reading online papers today and the comments posted thereon and I have yet to find a single bit of praise for the BBC's coverage.  I would like to think that the BBC might read all of these and think that perhaps they might, just might, have got it wrong.  However, as the BBC is the most arrogant and self satisfied body I have ever come across, they will ignore us and continue serenely on their way, regarding us all as lower than the dust beneath their chariot wheels.

My only vote of support for the BBC yesterday was the fact that Fiona Bruce was nowhere in sight, though I expected her to appear floating down the Thames in a pair of tight trousers at any moment, nor did we have to suffer the excruciating sight and sound of Katherine Jenkins singing in a dress with her tits hanging out.  For that BBC – my thanks.

Despite all of the above I thought the entire occasion was simply wonderful and the sight of a choir standing on deck in the cold and the pouring rain looking like a collection of drowned rats, singing Rule Brittania was just so bloody British I sat up and cheered.

We Brits are stoic Aunty Beeb, but be warned, we are running out of patience with you.

Glad I did not see it. Bet it was cutting and incisive (not)
Fiona did an interview with the Duke of Edinburgh last year – he was pretty short with her!

I think Sam Cam was wearing a black and grey and white thingy but she did have a black hat. thought she looked most elegant – I was one of the few who thought she looked good at the wedding last year sans hat.
Agree with you about Harry but, as y ou say, the Royal Family are sticklers for protocol

“Oh, and Ms Bruce did turn up today, Elaine (Tuesday) interviewing David Cameron.” Now there’s a delightful pair.

Not only did Tess do-dah think the Coronation was in 1952 but many commentated on the Coronation as if this Jubilee was 60 years since that great event. Oh, and Ms Bruce did turn up today, Elaine (Tuesday) interviewing David Cameron.
It would seem that Matt Baker is flavour of the month, he seems to be on everything these days.
It mightn’t not have been how the royals do things, but this morning on the way to the service in St Paul’s, I think it might’ve been nice if Price Harry could’ve accompanied the Queen, rather than a Lady in Waiting who, once the Bentley arrived at St Paul’s disappeared and the Queen was left to walk up the aisle on her own, looking to me a rather lonely figure. To have had Prince Harry walking just a pace behind, as Prince Philip has always done, would’ve been a nice gesture for the “spare”, giving him something really important to do in today’s ceremonies. But this is a personal opinion and perhaps not one shared by others, and certainly not by the royal family, who are sticklers for protocol and how things are done.
And was Samantha Cameron wearing black? Or was it just the lighting in St Pauls’ which made her outfit look black? Perhaps it was navy blue or dark grey. If it was black, it was inappropriate. OK for military, morning dress, and clergy, but not for a joyous occasion such as this; black should be reserved for funerals.

got to see bits and pieces on CBS network, and on NBC, and it was lovely! Of course, we were seeing it either “live” for about 5 sec, or some bit of tap later. Plan to look for highlights etc online. Was saddened to hear that Prince Phillip was in hospital and missed concert and Service of Thanksgiving etc today! They are so sweet together, the Queen and her Consort!
Sorry that the BBC has gone the way they have gone. Seems a true waste!

Simon – am watching ITV today and they did not utter a word during the service, just told us what the music was and then left it at that. They have Starkie on and he was excellent value. Not sure I will ever watch the BBC again for this sort of thing unless they get their act together.

The BBC somehow still seems, in my head, the right channel on which to watch Royal events – but, my goodness, they were awful. Huw Edwards is completely incapable of doing unscripted presenting – “Tell you what, it might be a good idea to look at the river now” – and most of the others, while well-meaning, weren’t up to the job. I thought Clare Balding did quite well, but as for the rest… and Tess Daly, oh goodness… I wish they would just let us see the event slowly unfolding, without panicking that people’s attention spans are only two minutes long. And today, for the service, they couldn’t shut up! We don’t need a commentary over everything, BBC, just show it to us, please.

You are right, there was a total lack of informed comment. And Tess Daly thought the coronation was in 1952!

Ann – they had sound issues with the music because of the rain I gather. All the crowds lining the sides of the river heard it all though and as they had braved the wet and the cold, thank goodness for that. the camera lenses were also covered in wet and drizzle and could not cope with the rain. When we saw the sights on the river it was wonderful but when they wheeled out more members of the Z-list my heart sank. I was hosting a tea party while we were watching it and the comments and jeers from my guests said it all

Oh, how I agree with every word! I sat here in Australia (at 10.30 pm) ready to enjoy a wonderful occasion and I was bitterly disappointed by the coverage by the BBC who used to do these things so well. I was leaning forward in my seat willing the camera to show more of the boats and I was dying to hear more about them. Where was the music I was looking forward to hearing? Though it was a marvellous event and the Gloriana and the Royal Barge were magnificent.

Heh. Oh well said. The BBC just use the same dozen or so presenters for every single thing. We needed a Dimbleby.

Never crossed my mind to watch Sky but wish I had done now.
I gather Fiona is due to turn up somewhere. You will know when as you will hear the screaming from Colchester………

  13. Elaine Avatar

Will be watching the service of Thanksgiving from St Pauls in morning – on ITV or SKY not the BBC

  14. Elaine Avatar

Danya – the actual thing itself was wonderful. The sight of the flotilla of boats coming down the Thames made me well up. It was just the crass commentary by ill informed BBC employees that was so grating. Everybody and I do mean everybody has said how dire it was so not just me being a moany old bag

  15. Elaine Avatar

I know their hair was like rat tails and they were soaked but they carried on – wonderful

  16. Elaine Avatar

Nice to know I was in your thoughts Thomas!

I too wished I had watched Sky – I have it but for some reason thought that only BBC were carrying it. Totally agree with all you said but didn’t think it as bad as the Royal Wedding coverage when it was quite obvious that the commentators hadn’t done any homework and didn’t know who was who.
Actually I was thinking about you when there was no appearance yesterday by Fiona, but there is always tomorrow she might yet turn up!

I will admit that I did not see every moment of the pageant, since we were at Glyndebourne, watching in the Long Bar and in the Organ Room, but the Beeb’s coverage was so slanted towards its own band of slebs rather than (is this just me?) wanting to see the different groups of boats and craft, and perhaps learning something interesting about them. My other gripe was that the camera coverage was focussed more on the Royal party on Spirit of Chartwell and not nearly so much on the pageant.
Tomorrow if will be that heady combo of a basket of ironing, cup of something hot and brown, and ITV or Sky.

Well, we over here in the colonies were just so thrilled to see any coverage whatsoever, we were watching online (I don’t have television) that we were in tears and thrilled with every moment and didn’t know enough to be upset! Not saying you are wrong but we just loved the whole thing, happy happy, savoring it all!

You always make me chuckle. I will be blogging soon about our recent visit to Sudley Castle in Winchcombe which had me thinking of you the whole time. The interpretation of the site is a bad, bad joke and makes a Fiona Bruce look like an insightful intellectual heavyweight.

Oh, how I agree with you! Every time the BBC cut to a so-called celebrity, or back to the goldfish bowl Matt was in, I switched to Sky,who were much better than the BBC yesterday. I only went back to the Beeb when Sky had adverts, or when Eammon Holmes was too much to bear!
It used to be that the BBC could be relied on to cover such events appropriately, but alas, I fear that is no longer true.
My heart went out to the choir on top of the Royal Philharmonic barge – grimly determined to sing out for the Queen, despite being soaked to the skin and visibly shivering.

  22. Elaine Avatar

Thank you Clodagh – the more people who let the BBC know how awful they were the better. Not that they will take a blind bit of notice of course

  23. Elaine Avatar

On the daily Telegraph there are over 1500 online comments on its awfulness but the response from the BBC is ‘we are proud of our coverage’. So sod off you ignorant proles you are ALL wrong and we are right…

  24. Elaine Avatar

It appeared that Sky coverage was good. I now have Sky but for some reason, unexplained, I did not think of watching with them. I wish I had now and will not make this mistake again

I couldn’t agree more. I tweeted my disappointment immediately after the coverage but I take my hat off to you – you’ve put down my feelings exactly. Beautifully expressed and so sadly true. Why weren’t ITV allowed to cover it too? Apparently it was much better on Sky but many of us haven’t got that and in any case, what’s wrong with ITV having it. Probably a question of money. Am going to tweet your blog to all my followers and urge them to retweet it to everyone who follows them. Thanks again.

We think alike. I have a feeling quite a lot of blogs are going to be saying just this, I was embarrassed at agreeing with the Daily Mail but frankly the embarrassment was the presenters. I missed out on the historian, my husband got so fed up he insisted on turning over to watch rugby and I was so dispirited by the coverage that iI didn’t have to strength to disagree.

How I agree with you Elaine.Britain can still pull out all the stops for a great state occasion but the BBC has lost all credability in being able to cover such events.
