A Walk in the Snow

Simply could not stay indoors today. Why is it that I will gladly huddle up in the warm when it is grey and rainy or just down right miz and yet I cannot resist the allure of snow?  Took some photos and lucky to find the gate open to Bourne Mill, a National Trust property on my doorstep, and wandered into the grounds. House shut, nobody around but was able to take some pics.  I have made a collage of some of them and thought you might like to see it.

And in case you are wondering, the two ducks in the middle are garden ornaments and not two who have frozen to death…..

    Thanks Elaine, that will be my next Dickens def. Funnily enough whilst I was dithering about I remembered from your archive, your extolling Jane Eyre, well they had been selling a nice copy of that at a daft price in Sainsburys the other day and I had got a copy for my TBR…. started it last night!

    I tramped around for about half an hour in the snow taking these pictures and just marvelling at how beautiful everything looked. I know in a few days when it is slushy and I am fed up with it all this feeling will pass but at the moment I am wallowing in the way it transforms every landscape into magic. Saw families and children out sledging yesterday on slopes near by and it looked like a Breughal painting.

    snow is lovely, at least when you have a place to stay/retreat to, and you can pick or choose to be out in it! Something exhilarating about snow, that is not found in other forms of precip! We aren’t having much in the way of snow this winter, in Indiana, and I am ok w/it, more or less. Had some almost-inch of ice, that cured me of winter weather, again, til next yr!
    Your photos are lovely! Esp. enjoyed the ducks, all snugged in their snow blanket!

    Fab photos Elaine. I love the way snow makes any scenery look special – especially when the sun shines and makes everything sparkly and bright.

    There is something rather exhilerating about being out in the snow. Rain does not have the same effect.
    Which is why I stayed indoors – rain in Hampshire.

    So beautiful! Thank you for posting these. We only get snow every few winters, and this is one of those years where it “ain’t a-gonna happen.” :) My kids will ooh and ahh and be very jealous (just like their mama).

    No I have forgotten – but mine was the rather feeble first one in reply to you – in that whoever I’m reading at the moment feels like my hero/heroine – just finished O. C. Shop and did rather fall under the spell of Little Nell. Have wrung out tissue and can make up my mind, which to start next, want to read them all…someone decide for me!!

    Sarah – every Sunday there are always families feeding the ducks and swans and it is such a pretty spot. Good to live alongside it
    So happy you are enjoying the CD companion – dont forget the prize draw for a copy of the letters of Dickens!

    This property, Bourne Mill, is literally 50 yards up the road from my flat. They hold an open day each year and I have popped in to see it, not much to see at all really, but it is in such a pretty setting with the lake and all the ducks and the swans. Love to walk past in throughout the seasons and watch the changes

    I am the same in that i can be the laziest person ever but when there is snow to walk in and enjoy, I actually readily put down book and put on boots. Bourne Mill looks lovely, I do remember going inside long ago when a boyfriend’s friend lived there. The duck pics reminded me of earlier days spent living in a mill cottage where there were many ducks waddling around with clumps of ice around their ankles. (If ducks do possess ankles!) The Oxford Companion to C.D. was waiting for me just now home from work – well recommended Elaine – so much to enjoy and wallow in.

    That is sooo beautiful, Elaine! We’ve not had any snow, and like you I dislike dank, grey, downright miz weather, but I love to see snow and wish that we had had some! But how lucky you are to have such a wonderful place on your doorstep. Any such place is quite a distance from us – our nearest NT property (Agatha Christie’s summer residence, Greenway) is about 6 miles away, but to get any form of parkland we would need to go to Saltram near Plymouth or Killerton near Exeter (both NT properties.)
