As someone who lies down with a drink when the feeling that I really should do some housework comes upon me, I sometimes find myself pitching in and sorting out at the most ridiculous times.  Last night I could not sleep so stayed awake watching rubbish movies on the TV and drinking tea and dunking biscuits.  Incredibly unhealthy I know, but there you go.

I finally got to bed and asleep at around 2am in the morning and then find myself wide awake at 7 am and to my utter astonishment found myself leaping out of bed and shifting all the furniture around in my living room.  Now, this was not a sudden impulse, I tend to mull on things for a while before I do them, but why on a Sunday morning should I suddenly decide that this is the time it must be done?  I moved everything around, took me an hour, took one look at it, decided it did not work and moved it all back again.  I then went into the kitchen to make some more tea and prepare breakfast and to my utter horror found myself cleaning the oven….yes, the oven, the most loathed job by all women all over the world (as a recent survey discovered – well, I could have told them that straight away and saved them money but they did not ask me).

I am now sitting on my sofa with my trusty laptop to hand tapping away about this as I really need to get this momentary aberration well and truly out of my system.  I am hot and dusty and dirty and need a shower and I know this afternoon I am going to keel over and fall asleep on the sofa.  I am going out to lunch with a friend today who is a life coach – perhaps she can shed some light on the matter.

Or is there anyone out there who can solve this problem?  I do not want to go through this dreadful experience again, it is all too much to bear….

Well, I have now spent the evening doing two hours of ironing and pressing. All my laundry is put away and my clothes are hanging up in the wardrobe spotless and ready to wear. I have also gone through my ‘pending tray’ (in reality a large basket into which I hurl all correspondence), sorting out bills, filing etc and sorted that out too. I now feel I have all this over in one fell swoop and can now lead a life of sloth and idleness for the next few weeks. Now, if only I could clear out my To Be Read box and have that nice and empty, well that would be an achievement but I don’t think that will ever happen. Not sure that I want it to actually….

Elaine, you have my every sympathy. I, too, am slightly horrified whenever I feel the urge come over me to do some serious tidying up. Often for me it’s about a state of mind, a displacement of the feeling that I want a nice clear start to a new project, or that I’m fed up with having too many little bitty things to think about. Mental confusion equals clean house. And like Ann, my husband and I tidy the house while we are having a row, or while we are sulking in the immediate aftermath. You’ve got to take it out on something. Never fear, the mood always passes.

    Kindred spirits all….
I do not live in a tip nor do I live in squalor but try as I might I really cannot get too worked up about dust and crumbs on the floor. I now live on my own and feel if I can put up with it, so can everyone else
I feel much better now, the madness passed

I find I do this when I’ve had an argument with anyone. There was one occasion I was never allowed to forget when I was teaching Primary after I had a really good row with my then partner and I decided that we (the children and I) were going to clean out the stock cupboard. That classroom had a stock cupboard to die for, as big as my cuurent office, and no one could remember the last time anyone had made it to the back. We were on the first floor and the children set to with a will, up and down the stairs with black bag after black bag of rubbish, almost filling our industrial size dustbins. That was until we discovered our two prize finds – and what do you do with an old ironcast mangle and a stuffed three-legged badger?!?

I’ve just a conversation about this with my husband, where we agreed that cleanliness is most definitely not next to Godliness, and that having a dirty house is not a moral failing. I’m convinced all this is true!
