RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

I am sure many of you have noticed that I do not post as often as I used to. It troubles me somewhat as I wonder where the enthusiasm I had for Random Jottings has gone. It is still there but these days I just find life seems to get in the way.   I had a think about it all and came to the conclusion that I would give up blogging and close Random down. I havered about and fiffed and faffed and, in the end, decided I would miss it too much. It has been going now for eighteen years and would leave a huge hole in my life if it ceased to be.

I have regular visitors and followers and I cannot tell you how much this means to me. I no Laplonger have hits in the thousands as I used to, more like hundreds now, and that is fine. Newer bloggers have multiplied, more vibrant, more interested in modern literature and the latest authors. As you all know by now modern novels have never appealed to me try though I might and I tend to wallow in Victorian literature, Golden Age crime, crime of all sorts and lovely romances and what is slightingly called 'chick-lit' a soubriquet which has always annoyed me.

So I had a think.  I have started From my Shelves this year when I revisit books I have loved and read and reviewed in the past and that will continue, but for up to date reviews of the latest Booker or whatever I am afraid you will have to look elsewhere. The book pages in the papers seem to offer very little of interest to me, my problem not theirs, and I can feel a draining of enthusiasm when receive press releases containing the words, 'searing' 'powerful' 'hardhitting' 'visceral' yadda yadda you get the drift.  I have reached the age when I am not interested in this kind of reading.

Anyway, I am wittering as per, so I have decided to continue but will change the slant of Random somewhat. I have always popped up with the Odd Rant or write about a movie, a play, Wimbledon and assorted other topics and I have decided that I am going to drop the idea that this is a book blog only and write about anything that I find interesting be it something I have seen on tv,  a walk I have taken, how I am dealing with increasing old age, my children and grandchildren, weight loss, health and, oh I don't know, anything that takes my fancy.

I read in the newspapers this week that the Duchess of Montecito has decided to resurrect her blog/website called The Tig which she gave up when she married His Royal Misery.   It seems that she will be dispensing all sorts of advice (no doubt how we can change the world) including how we can improve our mental health and wellness.   Easy to do when you are loaded and living in a posh mansion without any money worries, not so easy for most of us as I know well. So fear not, I will not be doing or saying anything like that at all. I would not be so presumptious as to feel I am an expert on how we should lead our lives. Most of us stumble along doing the very best we can,

So dear readers I do hope this sits well with you and you will continue to read, visit and comment.  It really keeps me going and makes me happy.

And I will start my new mixed bag Random by saying that the spring may have arrived, daffodils out, plants beginning to grow etc, but it is freezing here today and I am sitting here writing this with two jumpers on and wooly sox. I am going swimming later (oh and I have a wonderful rant about that coming up soon) and then will slob out for the rest of the day. I am visiting an old friend next week so we will gossip and chat and check out the charity shops which is always great fun so will not post until I get back. I will check and see if I have a From my Shelves ready to go and will then start the new regime on my return.

Please let me know what you think about it all and if you continue to visit Random, then bless you and thank you xx

That is good to hear. When you write about a book which you love and somebody else then reads it and feels the same is such a joy

By the bye, does anyone else think that actually Harry’s mental health seems to have taken a sharp downturn since he met the lovely Meghan? Come to think of it, she doesn’t seem to have done much to improve her father’s quality of life and wellness either.
Have to say,her chances of affecting the mental health and well-being of other female royals such as Anne, Camilla and Kate are pretty much zero but how I’d love to watch her try:)

I hate to follow the crowd but yes, I’m another one who’s delighted that your blog will continue! I love your comments on books and generally share many of your opinions although I’d like to put in a word for some modern fiction namely The White Woman on the Green Bicycle by Michelle Coffey (came out yonks ago so not that modern!) and Lucy Caldwell’s These Days, inexplicably missing from this year’s Women’s Prize longlist and a wonderful read.
I also enjoy hearing about your life, rants and all, and look forward to more from you as the year goes on. Always a treat.
Ah yes, hasn’t the Duchess of Markle gone quiet lately and hasn’t it been bliss? a bit like getting rid of an annoying bluebottle which has been buzzing round the room for days.

I am glad that you have decided to continue to blog and I love to read your rants too.
I like the variety of books you read, and I too find that if a book is nominated for the Booker prize etc, it would not be a book that I would enjoy.
I’m so glad that you are going to Australia again too.

Please continue. I am more a lurker than a comment leaver but I love hearing about you life. An acknowledged Anglophile I enjoy the glimpses into UK life from here in far off New Zealand

Your ‘mixed bag Random’ sounds great, Elaine. I’m always interested in what you write about your life and family; and enjoy your splendid rants. It would be a serious loss if you retired!! Looking forward to more From My Shelves, but daffodils and adventures with the plumbing are equally gripping.

I’m so glad you are going to continue, I would miss your recommendations and rants. I, too, prefer Golden Age books (and films) so it’s been lovely to read the thoughts of someone who enjoys them too.

Your plan sounds great to me! We need to hear from and read folks that are ‘real’, not pretentious, not looking for accolades (even though you deserve them. My goodness! Eighteen years of book blogging is pretty impressive!) Have loved your blog precisely for the reasons you just gave… I like all the same kinds of books you write about and I love reading your thoughts about them and about life in general. Thanks so much for all the work you do to keep us blog readers happy : )

I discovered your blog fairly recently, and am so glad you are going to continue in a form that feels comfortable for you. You put into words my own feelings about modern novels and the types of books which are reviewed in what’s left of the arts section of my daily newspaper here in Canada, and when I read your posts I often feel as if you are a friend who is on my wavelength!

Not all your admirers are ladies. I’ve been visiting you for maybe a dozen years, might be a bit more, and I’ve dropped a line a couple of times about something or other. We’re the same generation so I understand everything you’ve written today, and like everyone else, am delighted you’ll be carrying on, writing about whatever. Au reservoir.

Well, I would miss you terribly if Random disappeared. We have the same taste in books, and I’ve always enjoyed when you write about family, or repairmen, or nights at the opera, or your achy legs. Isn’t that what friends talk about?

I am extremely happy that you are continuing the blog. I find myself like you, not interested in modern literature as much as I am in Golden Age mysteries. Aloo, I feel as if I know you from reading your blog over the years (including the cooking blog and the cruise to Austratlia). I follow your blog through Feedly (an RSS reader) so whenever you post an update, I see it. So add my voice to the others filled with happiness that you will continue updating us on your thoughts and life.
