RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

I had a lovely time making this video.  I understand that some of you have had difficulty hearing some of my talk on Eva Ibbotson and I decided I would try to get a microphone or something that would make my ipad better for recording but it turned out to be a bit of a no hoper and did not work.

However, I have a computer guru who has showed me how to record on my laptop where the sound is much better so I am going to try that next time I make a video. In the meantime I do hope you can hear this OK and perhaps use earphones if possible?

The books I mention in this talk are as follows:

Victoria R.I by Elizabeth Longford

Queen Victoria by Julia Baird

Magnificent Obsession by Helen Rappaport

An Uncommon Woman – Hannah Pakula

Edward VII – Jane Ridley

All comments and opinions welcome as per usual.

I sometimes wonder what would have happened if Albert had not died when he did. Would Victoria have finally rebelled against his stifling of her personality or would she have continued to be so supportive and uncritical of him? I have my doubts

Make the first one the Julia Baird. It is wonderful

This was a delight, Elaine, and has encouraged me to order both the Julia Baird and the Jane Ridley; I already own the book by Helen Rappaport because I automatically buy everything she writes:)
I do sympathise with Queen Victoria not being a touchy-feeley person. What people don’t always understand is that if you’re not made that way, well, then you’re not made that way. I have people I love, friends who are very special to me, but I simply can’t do the huggy-kissy thing, it’s just not me.
As for Albert, I’ve long since added him to my short list of ‘men-who-should-have-lived-with-my-mother-for-a-week’; she had her faults, my mum, but my goodness she stood up for herself and taught her daughters to do likewise.

I really enjoyed your talk and will be looking out for most of the books you mentioned.
