RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

I have been faffing about uploading a video on You tube so I can insert it here on Random Jottings. During lockdown so many people have made videos that I decided I would have a go as well so here it is.

I talk about Double Lives,  a history of working motherhood and the author is my daughter Helen McCarthy. I would love it if you would watch, comment and share so that as many people as possible here about this excellent book because, as with all authors, all publicity, book chats and book festivals have all been cancelled which is such a shame. So I am doing my bit to publicise her work.

Do please leave comments and let me know what you think and if you would like me to do some more…

I await your reaction…..

The book sounds fascinating and your video was engaging and interesting. I rarely watch a video as I prefer text, but yours was worth watching all the way to the end.

Double Lives got a review in the August edition of the Family Tree Magazine that’s just been published. It says ‘Despite – or perhaps because of – being such a thoroughly researched book, it has a human touch and insight. I would expect that many women would identify with her findings – of carefully calibrated decisions … that working mothers make as to their careers and families”. I’m looking forward to reading, but it will have to wait until it’s published in paperback.

Thank you for those kind words Margaret. I have had such a positive response to this video, including an email from my youngest granddaughter, that I plan more. I really enoyed it

Lovely to hear and see you at last, Elaine! And what a wonderful book it sounds. I’ve put it on my List. I think you were very natural and you spoke so clearly, some TV presenters could take a lesson from you!

Hi again, Elaine. Just wondering if you would consider doing an author conversation with Helen in the way that literary festivals do? Obviously the focus would be on the new book! I have heard Helen a few times on Womans Hour and she has always been fluent and interesting on her subject. Now I know who she gets it from. Just a thought.

A marvellous idea to do a video. Very brave – but you pulled it off! Well done. I have bought copies of both books written by your daughter – looking forward to a wonderful read.

Great video, the first of many I hope. The book sounds so interesting, no wonder you are so proud of your clever daughter.

what a lovely video, but I must say watching you I have to comment on your hair which suits you so much, I would surmise that you have not changed since you had your clever daughter. I expect that she owes a great deal to you, her mother. Without parental help and guidance, where would we all be. you had to work doing everything there is to do and still give so much love and attention to your two girls. I, as a mere man can only write, thank you. next video, on anything please, a pleasure to watch and learn.

    Thank you Karen!! X

That must have been discouraging to hear that. My mum was a huge support but then she had been a working mum and a single one at that so knew what it was like.
That Sweater Labour show brought me out in hives!

I have to the bit between my teeth now….

Thank you so much Janet. I do appreciate your support. My mother was a single working mother, I was a working mother and now my daughter and I remember such a lot of attitudes mentioned in this book

Now I have got started there will be no stopping me….

Wonderful. Thank you so much. I have received a lot of positive feedback on the video so more to come I think

Helen will be delighted to hear you are going to buy it. THANKYOU
Many of my US visitors have said that they were surprised to hear my English accent as in their head when they read me they give me an American accent!

Thanks Caroline. I really enjoyed it so more will come

I don’t want anybody choosing my books!! How can they do tha unless they know you really well?
If you manage to get it and read it I will be very interested to hear your thoughts

Really enjoyed the video and the book sounds fascinating. My In Laws used to say I wasn’t a proper mum as I juggled work with raising my children.
I can’t believe that the poor used to be watched in that way by the rich like some kind of freak show.
I will get a copy of the book to read. Apart from Waterstones, sadly there are no small independent book shops near me.
Great video, I really enjoyed it.

Very interesting. That was a wonderful video, the first of many I hope.

Well done with your video and the book sounds a very interesting read. As a working mother (but now retired) and the daughter of a working mother, whose mother also worked, I’m sure it will ring lots of bells. I will probably order it through Hive, and support my local bookshop that way.

Lovely to hear you so eloquently speak. Would be wonderful to see little snippets now and again on your blog.

Lovely to see and hear you! The book sounds right up my street and couldn’t have come at a better time,as I can’t seem to settle with reading fiction during these unsettling times. Will be ordering asap.

Very interesting to put a face to your long-running, wonderful blog.
A really fine video–will not be your first I hope?
I will be buying this book, over here in the US.

A good video, you would never know it was your first.
The book has been added to my list of books to order from the library when it reopens.
It seems Suffolk libraries are going to start opening in July but the staff will choose the books for people – which sounds very odd. Although the mobile libraries are still off the road and no date for them coming round. There are a pile of ordered books in the mobile depot waiting for me – very frustrating.
