A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

Grey rainy day and then the sun came out and everything sparkled in the sunshine. We went to our favourite fish and chip restaurant and had haddock and chips. Melted in the mouth. Found a lovely cafe, Becketts, which we found last year, full of books as well as tea and cakes only to find it is always closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Why? Whitby was heaving and full of f visitors looking for tea. I had tracked down a knitting shop as I needed to buy some markers for my new project. Big sign in the doorway We are Open and underneath a sign We are closed. Again, why? So we went back to the car and drove back to Robin Hood's Bay where it is no different. Shops open when they feel like it and the place always, but always, is full of visitors. There is a bakery and cafe thirty yards from us and in the four years we have been here we have never seen it open. Never.

Anyway, home tomorrow. Think this is our last visit.  The hill down to the Bay and up to the top is lethal and has caused me severe problems this week for my knee and the precipitous steps in the cottage ditto. So next year a flat bit of Yorkshire methinks…if we can find such a place.

There was a notice in the window to say they are closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the whole year!!

I expect they will be open later in the season.I know they rely on students and school leavers and they haven’t broken up yet

Fish and chip shops doing huge trade, obviously. But was really puzzled why these places were not open. Same in Robin Hood’s Bay. OK open at weekends when most people visit and it is packed, but there are always walkers and visitors and not one cafe openn the week. Mad.

Had to laugh (in a kindly fashion and not at you) at your efforts to locate a cup of tea in a busy tourist town in June : we had EXACTLY the same experience there on our honeymoon 30 years ago. Plus ca change…

Safe journey home, dear girl, after a holiday that sounded a bit curate’s egg-ish. But a lovely photo of Whitby.
