RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

A torpor sets in when lying on a beach or by a pool with the sun blazing down and a clear blue sky and that noble thought you had prior to a holiday of a re-read of War and Peace or tackling A la Recerche de Temps Perdu and which seemed a good idea at the time withers in the heat. No wonder so many books are classified as Beach Reading though I do feel that can be a bit insulting as a book should be good, or bad, no matter what the weather.

No matter, I certainly have not been reading much which will exercise the little grey cells this past two weeks.  Lots of light romances which I have read, enjoyed and then forgotten once the two lovers finally get together, several thrillers – Marcia Clark is an American writer whose books I enjoy. She was the prosecutor in the O J Simpson trial so she certainly knows of what she writes, a couple of D L Sayers and a re-read of A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson which my daughter was reading and whose sniggering drove me demented so had to look at it again. Now it is her turn to put up with my laughter. I am also starting Down Under by Bryson to remind me of his thoughts on Oz many years ago.

Will be back in Sydney next week and intend to catch the bus into town one or two days and potter around the Rocks area and also revisit the Opera House which I have yet to do. they have a great shop in there and also a Lego Opera House kit which I am thinking of buying for Florence, or myself…

Resting on bed at mo after tiring morning on the beach.

At the moment I am rereading Billy Bryson’s book on Australia. Read it years ago and reading it again while in the country and knowing the places mentioned makes a huge difference.
Ah the Thorn Birds. In my opinion, one of the worst and over rated books EVER, sorry!

I suppose one thinks I have plenty of time so let us tackle a big book that has been languishing on shelves for. Years. I soon realised that this was a fallacy and have never bothered to exercise my mind on a beach ever since.
Have a great time in Japan

Sounds like a lovely vacation! I agree, it’s tough to do heavy reading when on a relaxing vacation. Sometimes it’s fun to try and match books to the destination — maybe The Thorn Birds? it was one of my favorites as a teenager and I always fantasized about Australia while reading it.

Glad you are having such a good time . We are trying to get house and dogs in order for the house sitter before we take off for Japan. I laughed at how one thinks about reading books such as War and Peace when lots of time available. I think our Japanese guide will run us around so much we won’t know what hit us. Looking forward to hearing about the cottage at Bronte Beach. You’ll be ready for the city by then.
