RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

As most of you here know I adore a good rant and Wimbledon provides me with plenty of material to splutter about.  You all know that most of these rants are written with my tongue firmly in my cheek. However, I have just had to take down a post on the first week at Wimbledon because I have had a go at Ms Serena Williams whose style of tennis and snarling aggression I dislike intensely.  Her sister less so.

All my posts are linked to Twitter and I have never had any trouble at all over the last few years. However, this may have to change and I become more selective as my last foray into ranting has resulted in some very unpleasant responses and this is the first time this has happened to me.  I can appreciate that my sense of humour is not for everyone but I have just been accused of bigotry, hatred, jealousy and racism because of my trenchant comments about Serena. My likes and dislikes are hugely irrational for the most part, I freely admit this, Nadal's twitching, Rog and his poncy blazer a few years ago blah blah blah. No rhyme or reason whatsoever and I and you know that.

However, others do not and I have been taught a valuable lesson today. There are trolls and unpleasant people out there and I now have to be aware of this, shame, as up to now I have had no problems whatsoever. Still, my own fault and I should have known better. So in future I will be choosing my posts which are linked to Twitter and will keep these to the bookish and music and cooking variety.

I have made the decision to keep off Twitter for the time being, or at least till Wimbledon ends. It is huge fun and I love it but it is very easy to start foaming at the mouth and get het up about things, as I know I have done this week, so best I give it a rest.

I think the internet is wonderful and can be, and is, a force for good but there are some nasty people out there and this has been a wake up call.

I do not ‘do’ Facebook, Twitter or any other social network, Elaine, only look at blogs and make comments. But please do make your usual rants on Wimbledon … we would all miss them if you didn’t! And the Ashes are about to happen! Wonderful rant material there!

    Dear Elaine,
I LOVE your rant! So sad that people have to disagree with you in such a ugly manner. Don’t let them get you down.

Thank you everyone for your lovely comments. they are much appreciated. This is the first time I have been on the receiving end of abuse like this and it was a bit upsetting but will keep a more keen eye out in future

Well I took it down Christine and am now rather sorry I did as I feel it is giving in but I was so taken aback by it all, and upset, that I decided discretion is the better part of valour.
the Ashes starts tomorrow so more rants on the way…

Twitter can be tremendous fun. I was on it during the Cardiff Singer of the World competition and had some delightful exchanges and chat with opera and music lovers. However, mention Ms Williams and the vileness which seems to be associated with her followers rears its ugly head. Only problem I have ever had with Twitter so I shall know what to avoid in future.

Well, as you know Harriet, I am a serial ranter but will probably make sure that any rants re sport are kept off Twitter. It seems those cause problems, people have their champions and get very het up about them, as do I.

It is odd Diana that out of all the rants that have been linked to Twitter it is the one that mentions Serena Williams that brings about this hateful response. Read any below the line forums in the papers and her followers are abusive and rabid. Not so those of her sister so it does make one wonder why….

Well yes precisely!!! and with the Wimbledon2day show there has been plenty to get annoyed about

next few weeks are going to be hectic and will be glad when things settle down and I find this heat exhausting. Cricket tomorrow so an alternative to the Williams and shriekers of the world. Should Andy get through to final I shall not be watching as my nerves get shredded.

Oh what a shame they should react like that. I always enjoy your rants, especially the ones on tennis and cricket, and I don’t see how anyone could regard the as bigotry, hatred, jealousy and racism. I’m sorry I seem to have missed your latest post, but I’m with you all the way on not liking Serena Williams’ style of play.

So sorry to hear this Elaine. I am not on Twitter and really dislike everything I hear about it. We live at a time when you can be accused of anything and everything just because you happen to disagree with someone. And since they can be haters in an anonymous way through the internet it is much easier for cowards to say what they want with no accountability.

Poor you. But I really dislike twitter for exactly this kind of reason. However having said this, my blog posts are linked to it — but I don’t rant much, so have escaped haters so far. Carry on ranting — it’s entertaining and we all enjoy it.

So sorry about the Twitter haters. It seems nowadays people can’t seem to understand that you might not like someone’s characteristics that have nothing to do with race or gender or whatever. Ignore the haters, and keep up your funny, feisty self.

I’m really sorry to hear that. After all, as I read somewhere else on the internet, “what’s the point of watching Wimbledon, if not to get annoyed with players you don’t like!”

This happened to me on Facebook. It seems the rules have changed but the lines are constantly shifting. Good luck. Hugs

So sorry to hear that. I read your post earlier, agreed with almost everything and laughed a lot. I love your rants especially about Wimbledon.
I also hope you are feeling better and that you won’t be so busy with family over the next couple of months that you have no time for reading and posting – oh, but there’s the cricket too of course. Phew!
