RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

I read and loved this book, the latest in the series set in pre-war Berlin and Paris and featuring Clara Vine, and reviewed it for Shiny New Books, the latest edition of which is out now.  Here is part of my review:

"The all pervading sense of tension and fear in Berlin at this time seeps through the pages: watching everything you say or do, choosing your friends and acquaintances carefully in case you fall foul of the ever-watchful party Warofficials. Life is bleak and expressed in shades of grey and shadows and rain and dark corners. It makes for gripping and nerve-wracking reading.

The febrile atmosphere coming from the Chancellery transmitted itself to passing pedestrians, who glanced across apprehensively as they passed by. Even the breeze seemed nervous, chivvying the leaves along the gutters ….."

And if you wish to read my thoughts on the two titles prior to this one, then here they are:

Your enjoyment of these books, which I fully expect to be great, will be enhanced if you read them in order.

I am so glad you are enjoying these Margaret. I found the detail simply fascinating, particularly about the wives of the high ups. There is to be a fourth I gather

I have started Black Roses, loving it so much I’ve ordered the next two in this series. There is so much historical information which while depressing, for we all know what happens (i.e. WW2) it is illuminating. Also, while there are chunks of historical detail, I don’t feel we are being lectured; these details really add significantly to the story whereas when some writers include chunks of historical detail, I feel they have learned it all and feel they simply must use it.

Thank you for the reviews of Jane Thynne’s books.
I have just finished the books (one audio) which I was lucky enough to borrow from the library and I did read them in order – totally engrossing and full of fascinating historical information not to mention page turning and suspenseful.
I liked them so much that I am going to buy them.
Again, thanks for recommending these marvelous books.

I have ordered the first in the series. I knew of this series, but hadn’t taken the plunge until now. You have led me astray, in a bookish sense, yet again by reminding me of this series!

I just ordered all three of these, thank you. I’d read the original post, but forgotten. Timely, what with summer reading coming.
