RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

I have had a very busy year being much more involved with family and grandchildren, helping move, childcare and visiting and, hence, for the first time in over five years I have read less than 200 books. I am at my lowest with the total for 2014 being 164. I also find that this year my reading has very much leaned towards crime and detection and have discovered many new authors as well as enjoying old and well loved writers.

Here below is the list of books I have enjoyed most over the last 12 months (in no particular order):

  • Old Friends and New Fancies – Sybil Brinton
  • The Great Impersonator – E Phillip Oppenheim
  • Grand Duchess of Nowhere – Laurie Graham
  • Knife Gun Poison Bomb – Martin O'Brien
  • I Visit the Soviets (aka The Provincial Lady goes to Russia) – E M Delafield
  • A Tangled Web – L M Montgomery
  • Cauldstane – Linda Gillard
  • Winter Garden – Jane Thynne
  • Black Roses – Jane Thynne
  • Blue Remembered Hills – Rosemary Sutcliff

It goes without saying that the highlight of 2014 has been the publication of Women of the World by my clever and gorgeous daughter, Helen McCarthy, and I have not included it in the above list as it goes without saying that I think it is wonderful.

OtmaFor that reason I am not making it by book of the year as I am totally biased and my choice for Random this year is The Four Sisters by Helen Rappaport.

This is not the first time I have chosen a book by this author for this accolade, if it can be deemed as such, but it is richly deserved. This story is beautifully written, impeccably researched and totally heartbreaking.   If you have yet to read it then I recommend that you make a good start to 2015 by getting hold of a copy.   My review is in two parts here and here.

So it remains for me to wish all Random readers and visitors a Happy New Year. You all continue to make my life fun and interesting so do keep on visiting. And do please leave comments as I love reading them, and if you are a lurker, I know I have some, then please come out of the shadows……..

The Soviet one was written for a paper and then repackaged as a PL title. I agree it is not the most interesting but still worth reading.
The Four Sisters is a wonderful book. I love Helen’s writing

I’ve heard so many raves about The Romanov Sisters! I run a nonfiction book group at the library and I’ve put it on the list, though we won’t be reading it until June. Now I’m sorry I didn’t move it up on the schedule!
The only one of the books on your top 12 list that I’ve heard of is The Provincial Lady and I confess I just couldn’t get through the Soviet volume. I really did try but I ended up returning it unread to the library. I think I’ll just skip it and move on to the Wartime volume.

That is a plan that I constantly think I will stick to but it never works! Family and grandchildren certainly cut into reading time but I am not complaining

Happy New Year to you and yours, Elaine.
I had a very ‘off’ reading year too – a mere 109 books read when I normally get past 150 with ease. I suppose part of that is down to having my daughter, her partner and youngest granddaughter living with us – uninterrupted reading time is very hard to find these days unless I stay up very late and then I tend to doze off plus of course it makes getting up for work even harder!
Hopefully 2015 will be better and I will finally get around to reading the copies of Four Sisters and Women of the World which I have squirreled away plus working through the massive pile of books that I managed to acquire last year. I am hoping to actually read more from my own shelves, at least in the early part of the year, and don’t intend to buy any books for the forseeable future or request any more from the library which has often been my downfall (online requesting is just TOO easy!)
    Well that’s the plan anyway!

Of all these I’ve only read Old Friends and New Fancies, and that was a re-read this year, but I agree it is a brilliant book. And of course Four Sisters, well deserved for your book of the year. Happy New Year to you!
