The Assassination of Franz Ferdinand

WoolmSunday is the anniversary of the shooting of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. I mention this as the Felixstowe Book Festival this weekend commemorates the hundred year anniversary of the start of World War I. Authors will be talking about books set in this time and there will be poetry and an event at the Landmark Fort at Felixstowe all to remind us of the terrible events that started in 1914.

Last year my book of the year was The Assassination of the Archduke by Greg King and Sue Woolmans. Please take time to read or to re-read my review of this marvellously moving book. The link is here. I knew about the shooting but knew nothing of the events leading up to it or the tragic story of the lives of the orphaned children left behind.

    You will be pleased to hear that Helen’s book is winging its way to me as we speak though hopefully the postman will not arrive with it while my husband is around – I have been in book buying mode for the past few weeks and he already thought I had too many so the additional piles are not proving popular! (Yes I married a philistine!)

    Just been a bit of a spendthrift and bought a copy of this and a copy of Helen Rappaport’s book about the Romanov sisters. Will be starting this in the next day or so – reading time permitting!
