RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

Still feeling wiped out though the sore throat is receding thank the Lord so more pics in this post and will be catching up with my recent reading later on in the week when I can concentrate a bit more.

I am a huge fan of a series on UK television, Doc Martin, starring Martin Clunes, who is a lovely man and an excellent actor.   Doc Martin, an esteemed and successful surgeon, develops a blood phobia and finds he can no longer carry out operations. He decides to get away from it all and takes up a post as a local GP in a fishing village in Cornwall.  The fishing village is Port Wenn but in reality it is Port Isaac and to my delight I found it was a mere fifteen minutes walk away from Port Gaverne where we were staying. So one day I set off for a lovely walk along the headlands and into Port Isaac where I unashamedly wandered around with my camera taking pics and generally being a Doc Martin groupie. I am pleased to say I was not alone and when I stopped a young couple and asked if they would take a pic of me outside the house they used for his practice in the TV series, they were pleased to do so if I would return the compliment.

So pictures shown here for aficionados of Doc Martin who will recognise them, but on their own merits for everyone else. Delightful place with gorgeous harbour, winding streets and full of charm.

The UK never ceases to amaze me – the number of beautiful places in a relatively small area, natural landscapes but also the fascinating range of architecture across the ages; I spent most of one visit to the UK seeing Gothic Cathedrals – and still didn’t see them all.
Have you visited St Ives? My grandmother corresponded for many years with her pen friend there. Another place I have not visited. Cornish ancestors lurk three generations back in my family history so their birth place is also on my long list.

Like all places in the UK we need the sun so we can see how beautiful they are and Cornwall in the sun is marvellous. Mark you I quite like walk along a beach in the rain as well. Simply love this part of England

Let me know when you plan to go Pam and I will come with you. Feeling much better today but a side effect of these antibiotics I gather is that they can make you drowsy. Only noticed that on the packet today. Drowsy is a misnomer they are knocking me for six!

When wandering around a pottery we were regaled with a CD of the Fishermen’s Friends and they sounded wonderful. I have a feeling I may wander in this way again somehow.

Love the Cornwall pics – can see Doc Martin heading purposefully down the road from his surgery. Weather looks perfect too!

I love the show Doc Martin ….we have seen all of the episodes at least twice. Love being a groupie and like your photos here. We went on a James Herriott pilgramage in the 70’s to Yorkshire and met the man himself. Funny how we adopt these people/characters. Hope I get to see Cornwall sometime. Have loved your photos and you’re looking well. Hang in there!!! ;-) Pam

How lovely My sister and I went to Port Isaac (several times) to see the ‘Fishermans Friends’ a fantastic group of local men ) fishermen, potter, tea shop owner etc, who sing sea shantys (?) they were performing most Friday nights on the Platt, in the harbour for anyone who wanted to see/hear them. Always popular there were lots of people. Fantastic voices. They have sadly not performed since earlier this year after losing one of their number in a freak accident. Hopefully they will return in the not too distant future, and they are not to be missed. They have their own website should you be going that way again. … Such a pretty little harbour, and of course the added attraction of seeing ‘Port Wenn’.

Am seriously thinking of finding a tiny cottage next year and going off on my own to cornwall. I love it and may stay near Marazion so I can see St Michaels Mount again. Just love it

What a beautiful place! In all our trips to England, we never made it to Cornwall. Thanks for sharing your photos.
I’m glad you’re beginning to feel better. I used to get strep throat and tonsillitis all the time when I was a kid, but I still have my tonsils.
