Random Jewels

I have been going through my mum's jewellery.  Have not really looked at it for some time, makes me sad, but over the weekend I have been sorting through it.  Nothing of particular value, save a double string of pearls which are now mine, but lots of costume jewellery which I have found really interesting to look at.   I have photographed some of her brooches and have made a collage of some of them which I thought you might like to see.

She has various rings and pendants which I remember her wearing as a child and though some of them are falling apart and are really not worth repairing, they will stay in my box.  Also some bracelets and necklaces which I remember her buying in Egypt and I have a sneaky feeling one or two of them may be ivory, not allowed now of course.

    My mum was born in 1912. It was lovely looking through all these. Not sure what to do with it but I know I won’t be getting rid of it.

    I have her double string of pearls as well which I have had restrung. These are over 50 years old and are still in the original Bravingtons box

    There is one piece there, the star shaped brooch with clear pear shaped insets which seems to be made by Kenneth Lane. When I checked him out he seems to be an American costume jeweller of the 50s onwards so will do a bit of research. I love them all.
    My mother also collected brassware and I have heaps of that and dont know what to do with it

    Oh oh oh. How lovely. So very intimate and wearable, and of the era. Similar to my mom’s (I think your mom was older, wasn’t she? Mine was born 1922, and is in a retirement home.) The centre one is quite familiar, since Mom has one very like it.

    What lovely jewelry you have from your mother. Thank you for showing it. How wonderful to have them especially as your remember her having worn the pieces. I have seen similar on Antique Roadshow. I have a carved ivory bead necklace strung with silk from my mother that I wear all the time. Makes me feel close to her. It is old and quite dark now and I think most people think the ivory is wooden beads. Interesting comment about antique ivory from the contributor above.

    I’m sure you’d never throw your mother’s jewelry away, but, apart from sentimental value, you might be surprised at the value of older costume jewelry. It was better made than costume jewelry is today and authentic period pieces are collectible. You have a lovely collection of pieces.
    I understand why your undertaking makes you sad. I’ve just finished sorting twenty years worth of letters between me and my late mother. I’ve waited over twelve years to do this, hoping that at some point it would be like having her with me. But, mostly, it’s just made me realize how very much I still miss her. We’re lucky to have had wonderful mothers, aren’t we?

    A gorgeous collage. I’ve got a little wreath of seed pearls like yours too, inherited from a great aunt. What are you going to do with yours? I’ve got several broaches which I never wear and I keep thinking that it’d be really nice to put them in a velvet backed frame and hang them on the wall – finding the right frame with the correct depth is the problem.

    Don’t they look wonderful as a collage, and you will have lovely memories of her wearing such pieces. You say that you have a sneaky feeeling one or two of them may be ivory, “not allowed now of course.” This is true, jewellery or anything else for that matter may not be made from ivory, but antique ivory is fine. The UK ivory law, I believe, states that the cut off date is 1 June 1947, anything before that is OK to be bought and sold (but there must be provenance of the date.) Also it must be in ‘worked’ ivory form, carved, etc, not in the natural state.

    A beautiful collage.
    My mum and I are clearing out her mums jewellery box at the moment, as she is now in a home. We have found some wonderful things as well as the little love notes that my grandad wrote when he gave her some of the pieces, still in their boxes as well.
