RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

When chatting to neighbours about our communal gardens I said there were no rules or regulations regarding same but I drew the line at Gnomes.  I will admit to finding them rather endearing but they do tend to populate and take over if you allow just one to take up residence.

So it was with some shock I awoke from my afternoon nap yesterday (oh I do love my zzzz after lunch), glanced out of my window to check that my plants which I had put in that morning were growing (yes I know) and SHOCK HORROR there in the middle of my rose bed was a GNOME.   I immediately knew who was guilty, step forward my neighbours Alison and Gary, and I nipped out and picked Norman up, for that is now his name, and reached inside their kitchen window and popped him on the work surface.

About ten minutes later I heard a stealthy sound and when I opened my front door there he was looking at me rather sadly and wanting to get in.  Well, I wasn't having any of that and put him back on the window sill next door where was faced with the suspicious and unwelcoming gaze of Fraggle the cat.  OK back to my window, Oh Please let me in.

I am made of sterner stuff however, and out he went to spend the night with Derek and Doris.  I thought  he looked happy in their company though I will admit to a pang when I checked he was alright with them before I went to bed and noticed they were ignoring him.

When I woke this morning I peered through my curtains.  He was GONE.  I opened my bedroom curtains and looked all round, no sign. I checked my back window, no sign.

In the end I spoke to my neighbours who had taken pity on him and brought him inside.  I asked if he could visit with me for a while as I could not resist those big pleading eyes and as I speak he is sitting on the floor reading Hello magazine and wondering Who on Earth are Liz Hurley and Shane Warne?

I have a feeling he is going to take over….

Gnomes ARE endearing, as well as enduring. I am married to one……….

Well Richard do you think there is a Gnome Delivery Service? I agree that sticking him out in the wilds of Scotland would probably wipe the grin of his face but I simply cannot bear the thought of a lonely, lost gnome out on the Scottish fells….

    Oh how funny

Elaine, you have a great sense of humour, we do not have gnomes up here in central Scotland, it is far too cold. If you want to get rid of him DHL will bring him up here to the frozen north. He will soon lose that silly grin……….the cold will get everywhere !!! Great blog

All the dwarfs are identical(sextuplets?)- they’re just painted in different colours!

  6. Elaine Avatar

That is a very good suggestion……..

Which dwarf is missing Sandy – Grumpy or perhaps DOzy?

  8. Elaine Avatar

No I would not want them in my garden either but I will admit Norman has made me smile

Jo – it was just a delightful and funny little interlude and made a lovely ending to the day yesterday and a good start this morning

I hate gnomes! On the other hand, I can see why Norman has got under your skin – you have to find somewhere else to put him so this can run and run.
A house near my mother has a pottery Snow White and six dwarfs – I can never work out if they can’t count or one has gone walkabout!

I’ve never liked ’em, or rather, the kinds of people who have them who take them seriously. They are fun (although I’d not actually want one in our garden.) I wonder if you read in the paper that there is a roundabout in Totnes (only in Totnes, twinned with Narnia!) which has been populated by blue gnomes? Devon Ceramics, a local pottery company, have adopted this roundabout, tided it up and made it look very nice, but have upset some of the townsfolk by allowing some of their blue pottery gnomes (they’re the colour of Smurfs) to take up residence. I love them! I’d not want them in my garden but on this roundabout they’re as friendly as Dougall and Florence and Zebedee! Now there’s a thought …
There is a house on Babbacombe Downs, near Torquay, which has all kinds of toys and gnomes in the front garden and it always brings a smile to the faces of passers’ by.

Not a gnome fan but there is something fun about him, and made me laugh with the antics with your neighbours. Such fun!
Hope he does not wish to leave after reading about Liz and Shane he may feel he is not the perfect gnome?

I hope you have also put the radio on to keep him entertained. I know you are a big Radio 3 fan, but I suspect he may prefer the Gnome Service!
Yesterday I was in one of my ‘maybe the internet wasn’t such a great idea after all’ sort of moods, having made the mistake of scrolling through the comments on the a national newspaper webpage – never a good idea, but I thought I was on safe ground with a piece about archaeology. Thanks for reaffirming my belief in the positive side of online communication, with this charming, light-hearted post.

I know gnomes are naff, but they are so cheerful, and he does have a nice smile and lovely big eyes… go on, give a gnome a home…Actually I have to admit I have one in the kitchen because he was cold outside… I bought him for a window display in the Oxfam bookshop, and hadn’t got the heart to put him out for sale when we changed the window…

I’m with you on gnomes, Elaine. But I’m a sucker for Norman’s hopeful, helpful look…
