Outfoxing the digital revolution – Slightly Foxed

The editions are limited to 2,000 and numbered by hand by the traditional bookbinders, Smith Settle, near Leeds. (Much printing these days is done overseas.) They sell for £12.50, but their early publications, such as Rosemary Sutcliff’s Blue Remembered Hills, can now be found on second-hand book website Abebooks for £80.

This was in the telegraph yesterday and there is a great little video to go with it.  Delighted they are getting the publicity and that they are making a profit.   As you know, I recently visited the Bookshop, see my post here, and love the SF editions. The Dodie Smith wonderful, see here and I am more than happy to beat the drum for publishers of this kind.  We need them and though I love my Kindle, my delight and joy in this sort of enterprise will never die.

    I think they overprice most things and also have an unfair advantage with their dedicated bookshops. I tend to avoid them when I come across them as I feel they are far too expensive

    The woman on the till offered to check on the price, then went all ditsy as she contemplated the computer screen, then said she couldn’t “just then”, but would later……….at this point I was opening the door preparatory to leaving (in a huff, or maybe a minute and a huff, as Groucho said).
    We have a dedicated Oxfam bookshop in Chiswick and on the whole I find their prices very fair, and they filter out Literature from the dross, so one can have a quick shufty on those shelves alone and save much time. It is rather sad to think of the wonderful unread, unopened books I have bought there for £1.50 or £1.99.

    I think the prices in the Oxfam shops are dreadful and I refuse to buy from them any more. what did you say when you told them off?

    Just to say I was back at Slightly Foxed this morning to get a copy of The House In Flanders for my sister-in-law’s birthday. I also came away with The Missing Will by Michael Wharton, Mangoes and Mimosas by Suzanne St.Albans, and My grandmothers and I by Diana Holman Hunt. I love these smallish clothbound books which fit easily into a handbag or coat pocket; current reading is the first Bill Slider omnibus which almost requires an omnibus to carry it around!
    I’d found The Missing Will (SF edition) in the Portobello Oxfam priced at £14.99, and ticked them off for charging more for it than a new copy would cost, so thought I’d better arm myself with my own copy before SF sold out and I had to crawl back to Oxfam, pride in pocket!
    A wonderful spring pleasure was parking beneath a mimosa tree in Hereford Square, which must have predisposed me to buy Suzanne St A’s book! It is in full fig and looks quite glorious.

    Hi Kim in Cambridge – the UK one. I live in Colchester not too far away and come to Cam quite often as I love it so much. I tend to dip in and out of SF and just read them as and when. I used to have a sub and they just piled up unread. I love thse books, think they are beautiful
    I have a Kindle too and love it but, like you, nothing will replace my books

    I am pleased … I have bought them all. Must get them added to my will!!
    Once I discovered Slightly Foxed (through Dove Grey Reader) I bought them all enjoying a bedtime feast of reading until I was all caught up and waiting impatiently for the next quarter to arrive.
    I recently received a Kindle which is fine but nothing compared to the floor to ceiling bookcases that line the walls here.

    Yes a lovely day in Colchester. daffs and crocuses out and suddenly there is a Spring in the air.
    The SF editions are really lovely – I think the entire enterprise is wonderful

    Oh Elaine, what a lovely little film – I want to work there! Thanks so much for the link, will probably download to keep if its poss! I “found” Slightly Foxed last year, had a trial sub to be sensible but really knew all along it was a done deal! Just love it and everything about it – one through the letterbox last week joy of joys, plus have found some back numbers fairly inexpensively on ebay. Anyone who hasn’t heard of them – get googling! Hope the sun here in Kelvedon is equally fab in Colchester!
