RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

Off blog for a day or two so just a bijou reminderette that I am giving away a copy of the selected letters of Charles Dickens, edited by Jenny Hartley.  All you have to do is tell me which is your favourite Dickens character and why and I will make a totally and completely arbitrary choice as the lucky recipient of this great edition, published by OUP and donated by them.

So either leave your reply on this post or the earlier one on Charles Dickens, OUP do it in style, and I will make the draw at the weekend – probably on Sunday, which is Florence's second birthday and seems as good a day as any.

What larks!

I have several favourites.. and Miss Havisham from Great expectations will have to be my favourite.

Mine is Wackford Squeers–one of the best examples of Dickens’ whimsical character-naming, in my opinion–I love his uncouth cruelty. (To be honest, I have several favourites from NN, including all members of the Crummels family).

My favourite character is Smallweed: “Shake me up, Judy!” He’s wonderful and awful at the same time!
