A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

….but have to blog about a book today written by my daughter, Helen or, to give her full title, Dr Helen McCarthy.

The book in question is The British People and the League of Nations and, according to the Manchester University Press website, 'is a vivid and readable account of this popular League consciousness, revealing the extraordinarily vibrant characters of associational life between the wars'.  Helen gave Leagueme a copy last week.  She does not expect this to make the best seller list, nor to appear on the shelves at Waterstones, as it is a book destined for academic libraries and used for research and will be on future reading lists for anybody interested in this and associated subjects.  To write and publish a book which will be used by future historians and students is a huge accolade for an academic so, as you can imagine, I am immensely proud of my daughter.

Add in to this she is currently writing a book on Women in Diplomacy which will be published in 2014 by Bloomsbury, that she lectures in Modern British History at Queen Mary, University of London, and has also produced the most gorgeous lovely granddaughter for me, and you will understand that I am bursting with pride at all she has achieved so far.

And, if that is not enough, my lovely son-in-law James has also had a book of his own published (Pashas by James Mather).

A bit scary sometimes being the mother and mother in law of this combined powerhouse of talent, but rather wonderful too….

thank you Anne – I h\ave to be careful not to boast about my children and son in law, but it is very tempting. Had an email from Daughter No 1 in Oz today to say how proud she was of her sister and how glad she is that they both have such a different outlook on life and ambitions so that she can rejoice in her sister’s success and not feel a pang of envy. I am very glad of that as well!!
Susan – It is out in paperback now so do do buy one – I shall tell James!! There is a dedication to Helen in the introduction.

Hi Elaine, Pashas is so up my street as I travel extensively myself to international outback regions from time to time and hold a great interest in translated Arabic & Persian literature. I have seen this book quite often here in the Irish bookstores in Dublin and had considered picking up a copy. I was attracted to the cover also. Well, I’m thrilled to know it was written by your son-in-law and I’ll definitely purchase Pashas tomorrow when I’m in town.

and how great to have off-spring (and off-spring-in-laws) who make you proud — a great thing, esp in today’s world!
    YAY for all of you!

Congratulations to her and of course the fabulous mother who produced such a daughter!
It sounds like the sort of book I would have used whilst doing my A Level History and my History degree.
