A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

There had been musicals before. In the 1930s, as soon as sound permitted, Warner Brothers developed what we call the Busby Berkeley pictures: they were black and white, and often aware of the harsh Depression times, but a choreographic lather of girls and fluid, orgasmic forms where the camera was itching to plunge into the centre of the "big O" – think of Footlight Parade, Gold Diggers of 1933 or 42nd Street. They had aerial shots of waves and whirlpools of chorus girls, opening and closing their legs in time with our desire. A few years later, at RKO Pictures, the Astaire-Rogers films came into being – where the gravity, beauty, and exhilaration of the set-piece numbers (effectively directed by Astaire) ignored the weightless framework of the stories and their inane romantic complications.

I’ve just found out that the stage version of Singin’ in the Rain is transferring to the West End in February – perhaps I’ll see you there!
If it’s half as good as Top Hat was, I will be a very happy bunny!

Oh, how I love musicals! What an interesting article, thanks for the link. I’ve checked out the BFI Musicals season and I wish I lived in London. Having said that, I do have almost all of them on DVD, but it would have been nice to see them as they were intended – on the big screen.
Sorry to read that you missed Top Hat – I go next Wednesday – hope you manage to catch it when it transfers to the West End.

Daphne – delighted to hear you are now subscribing and that you liked the Zouroudi
Jo – yes I have spotted this
Susan D – was never a fan of James Cagney but love musicals of that time. Had to miss Top Hat last week as my neck meant I could not drive but have just heard that it is moving to the West End in April so Yippee!!

I was certainly a big aficionado of 1930s musicals way back when I could stay up late and watch them on CBC around midnight (before VCRs, of course, so I had to arrange my time around the movie’s time). 42nd Street, Footlight Parade (starring that great song and dance man, Jimmy Cagney) Anything Goes, Broadway Melody of ’36 ’38, ’40 etc.
