The writer of Lark Rise to Candleford is to return to BBC1 with a new series based on French novelist Emile Zola's The Ladies' Paradise, a rags to riches story about a young girl in the 1890s.

I read this Zola book a few yars ago and simply loved it (my review is here). I gather it is being relocated from Paris to Manchester – cannot help but feel that if the BBC can move most of its functions from London to Salford it could film in Paris. They seem to have enough money to chuck around – witness the blanket coverage of the Glastonbury Festival where the BBC staff is in triple figures and has booked up every hotel for miles around.

BUT I am off again so ignore me and read this article. Much though I love the Divine Jane, Dickens and the Brontes, good to see them tackling another author

I have this on a shelf having bought it following a review on another blog (yours pre-dates my reading any blogs.) I had better get a move on and read it so I am ahead of the game for once!

Nothing to do with Lark Rise or Zola, Elaine, but I would just like to raise a glass or hand clap for Rory McIlroy, the youngest winner of the American Masters … let’s hear it for the lad, and on the day that your beloved Wimbledon starts.

Did not read this one in 19th C. French novel, although we covered a lot of Zolà. I’m looking forward to both reading the novel and seeing the adaptation.

I got stuck half way through this Zola novel … might now return to it.
