RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

This is going to be a quick post for Monday as I have just been watching Spooks.  As usual, over acted, lots of elliptical comments through tight lips and crap dialogue:

"Not sure I can do this much longer Ruth. Stop one disaster and another comes along"

"It's what we do"

Close up of protagonists looking at each other meaningfully in silence.  Honestly it is so BAD and so CORNY I am surprised the actors can say the lines without corprsing.  Tonight submersibles heading towards the Houses of Parliament were stopped at the very last minute. The question here is Why?  Surely blowing up Parliament would be a good idea…..

Anyway, the reason for watching this bilge which I freely admit I simply loved is that the unutterablygorgeoussexydelicious and eminently fanciable Richard Armitage is in it and I could sit and watch him quite happily reading the telephone book.  He charged around emoting danger and sexiness in equal measure, dressed in black mostly (oh be still  my beating heart…) and has left me with the need to go and lie down in a darkened room with a wet cloth on my head.

But before I do that just a quick catch up. Kathryn telephoned from Sydney this morning, her evening, and we had a great chat. She is doing brilliantly and has just won an award for being the best Business Manager in the whole of New South Wales and she has only been there for three months.  So proud of her. We discussed my visit and have decided that after taking me to the Opera House for my birthday YAY we are then going to go to the Great Barrier Reef for five days and then will come back to Sydney as Kathryn obviously has to go to work, and I will explore Sydney and reacquaint myself with that wonderful city and go on trips and we will be together in the evenings and weekends.  I think I have found a flat to stay in only ten mins from where she lives which is near Bondhi and the train station.  I am so excited I think I may spontaneously combust before I get there.

Am packing at the moment for a week away next week. I am going on a 'holiday' if that is the right way to describe it and doing something totally out of my comfort zone and yes I hate using that phrase, but cannot think of a better one.  I will be taking a complete blog break for that week so there will be seven days of Randomless Jottings so will try and get lots of stuff in before I go.  I am keeping the 'holiday' a secret till I get back and tell you all about it then.

In the meantime, bed calleth, tea calleth and Tess Gerritsen calleth. So off I go and back tomorrow.

PS – am putting a pic of Richard Armitage in the post just in case you have forgotten what he looks like…….

After all of your house work lately, I can’t think of anyone who enjoys a holiday more than you do! Have a wonderful time.

Glad that everyone else loves this series even though it is hugely risible. I remember Peter Firth when he was young and sweet, was it him who ws in the stage play of Equus when it was first premiered or am I getting muddled?
Thought Simon Russell Beale was WONDERFUL. After seeing him sing and dance at the Proms in the summer, listened to his Smiley on Radio 4 and now this – simply marvellous, could watch him for hours

Have a lovely holiday – and thanks for the photo of Richard Armitage. Has made me feel much better.

    Just a PS –
Two things I wanted to say, but forgot:
    1. Have a good ‘holiday’ Elaine and then tell us all about it. Sounds like you’re going to have a little adventure!
    2. Peter Firth first came to my attention as a time traveller in The Flipside of Dominic Hide – I wonder who else remembers this from 1980?

Like Annabel, I adore Spooks. Not sure whether it is even close to truth, this kind of fiction, but if it is it’s scary, and if it’s not, one can imagine that it is just within the realms of possibility, even with the corny dialogue. I adore Peter Firth and also, loved Simon Russell-Beale as the Home Secreatary – I remember him from long ago in Dance to the Music of Time – wasn’t he Widmerpool?
Talking of TV dramas for the “new autumn season” as they’re so often trailed, what a pity that Downton Abbey (ITV1) on Sunday clashes with another short series of George Gently (BBC1). I can record, but sadly when I play back DVDs that I’ve recorded, even using a channel which isn’t actually broadcasting anything at the time, say BBC4 but using that channel as a playback channel in the afternoon (if this is making any sense to you!) we still get noise from another station coming through in the background (and in the foreground if that programme happens to be one of the shopping channels!) How annoying it is, though, after months of ‘rubbish’ and repeats which are now referred to as ‘another chance to see’ programmes, that brand new dramas have to clash in this way.

Thanks for the pic Elaine, it has quite cheered me up!
Looks like Spooks is the latest in a line of programmes that have their ratings boosted by the Armitage effect!
His wonderful turn as Guy of Gisborne was certainly the only reason to watch the BBC’s version of Robin Hood.
Quite fond of Peter Firth as well – anyone else remember him from the Double Deckers back in the very early 70’s?

I adore Spooks – I don’t care about the corniness, but I’ve watched it and loved all the leading men since it first appeared. Must admit I am very fond of Harry Pearce though – one of my best friends is the spitting image of Peter Firth. Loved Simon-Russell-Beale’s comedy turn as the new Home Sec.

A picture of Richard Armitage is a good pick-me-up when you’re back at work Elaine, so thank you! Spooks has certainly gone down hill since the first series but I quite enjoy it in a dreadful way!

Richard Armitage has been seared into my brain since I first watched North and South. I even went and bought the book to read. But you’re right, he’s the only reason most of us watch Spooks. Have a nice holiday!
