Apparently Rapunzel is now going to be called 'Tangled' as Disney fear it is too 'gender specific'. I sometimes think we have all gone mad….

Jessica – you obviously feel very strongly about Disney and I agree that many of their films are excellent. Both my daughters enjoyed Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella, etc etc and later the simply wonderful Beauty and the Beast (which still remains my favourite) and Aladdin. I gather in the Princess and the Frog they went back to the handpainted way of producing instead of the computer generated way and I was very pleased to hear this.
Therefore, with this wonderful history and background why the executives of Disney haved fallen foul of political correctness? They are aiming at children and most of them don’t give a damn about this – they just want to see a great movie. And, as I have already stated, each time I have been to a Disney film the audience was nearly all girls so cannot imagine that a boy would want to see Rapunzel anyway no matter what it was called!

First of all first post.. girl or guy..barking mad? Pocohantas never married Jon Smith she actually married John Rolfe and died before the age of 25 after she was an ambassator to england for the native american people.. She was an amazing women so young ..I personaly love the disney versions of fairy tales, I have personally read all the classic fairy tales they are gruesome and difficult most do not have the happy endings we expect or see..Disney versions are more fun while still teaching the important lessons that classice literarture was so found of.. and they introduce children to literature they would never read in general.. unless they are a bookworm like me lol… Check out Hunchback Of Notre Dame’ the story then see the film by disney its fantastic.. Also Tarzan is almost spot on with the original tale.. In retrospect tho.. Films of any genre are supposed to be fun and enjoyable.. I can watch any disney film and know I will be entertained and that it is appropriate for my kids to watch.. You cannot say that about many shows these days that are supposed to be kid friendly.. I think the politically correct stuff is silly too.. It is just bored people finding fault in children’s stories maybe they never got to read or see them as a kid now they make it there mission to tear any apart for silly things like that.. I think that the princess and the frog is a wonderful film.. no to mention beautiful I love the 2d and all the hand painted work that gooes into them its much more inpressive to me then the computer generated stuff..

I have never felt the slightest interest in going to Disneyworld. I prefer the ‘old’ Disney cartoons such as Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (which presumably would now have to be renamed Snow White and the Seven Small Persons), Alice in Wonderland, Pinnochio etc and find these politically correct offerings infuriating.
As for being too gender specific, every time I took my two children to see a Disney film at the cinema, noted that the audience was nearly 100% girls so fail to see what the problem is, quite frankly.
Simon – I must say a pet duck called Rapunzel….I am intrigued!

Ugh!! I hate the politically-correct “Disney-fication” of these old fairy tales. In fact, I count as one of the primary advantages of not having children the fact that I never, ever, have to go to those films, and likely will die happy never having been to Disneyworld. A weary office colleague who just returned from a week there with his wife and three children referred to it as “the Bataan Death March” of vacations.

I became certain many years ago that Disney represents the death of culture in the Western world. Did you ever notice that any person of color in a Disney cartoon looks like a white person with a tan?

They’ve evidently beefed up the guy character’s part as well. Whatever. I am determined that this movie be good! I loved Rapunzel when I was a kid because I too have long fair hair, and this movie’s going to be good or else, darn it!
(Denial ain’t just a river in Egypt.)

Oh I am furious! This is ridiculous.
I had a pet duck I called Rapunzel when I was 5… thats another story though!

So the Disney bosses think boys will be interested in a movie about hair? That’s the best laugh I’ve had all day.

Right. Because “Rapunzel” is threatening to replace Emily as the trendy girl-name of the decade?
But hey, it’s about a woman imprisoned in a tower waiting for a prince to come and rescue her. Sounds like a guy fantasy to me.

Disney also had Pocahontas marry John Smith. grrrr In general, I’m not a Disney fan, for that reason. And why is it the first “princess” movie by Disney with a “woman of color” has her as a frog for most of the movie??
Yes, we’ve all gone barking mad. ;-D
