A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

Lovely day in Cambridge today on one of my regular lunch dates with Jan Jones, author of Fortunate Wager, which I recently reviewed.

Here is a lovely picture of Jan with her book

and of course I made sure my copy was  signed by the author

and we had a lovely lunch and here is what Jan had for dessert….

I visited the Haunted Bookshop before lunch and checked out the Richmal Crompton collection and found two or three of the rarer titles and one, The Wildings, was priced at £95 so I went a whiter shade of pale and left that one behind.  I did find a copy of Matty and the Dearingroydes, which I had been wanting for some time (Simon very kindly loaned me his a few years ago) and that was £30 which was the maximum I was prepared to pay, so I waved my credit card and bought it.  It was in good condition and with a dustjacket, also in good condition so I was pleased with my purchase. I then popped into a remaindered book shop and found a brand new copy of The Adventures of Sally by PG Wodehouse for £2.99.  Know nothing about this title so interested to find it.

I rounded off the day by popping into the wonderful new John Lewis at Cambridge to do some Christmas shopping and managed to get quite a lot done in one fell swoop.  The bus taking me back to my Park and Ride where I had left the car was just outside the entrance so when I left I was fortunate that a bus was drawing up.  Perfect timing, if I had missed that one it would haev been about another 20 minutes before the next one.  Traffic heavy by this time and I ended up driving along the M11 in the dark and, as I am a bit of a wuss about night driving, I was getting a bit panicky and tense.   There were major road works as well and I was nose to tail with a huge lorry and another one behind me, all chuntering along at about 30 mph in narrow lanes so was glad to get home I can tell you.

Am going to be watching Spooks in a bit.  As I have said before, simply dreadful programme, it is so ludicrously bad it is funny and of course, Richard Armitage is the only reason I look at it.  From the trailers I have seen so far, he seems to be emoting all over the place this week so looking forward to that….

I love Cambridge although I say that having been there only three times … twice on my own (when husband was on business and I was left to enjoy a day on my own in the city) and once, just passing through with my husband en route to Suffolk. But what amazed me was, even the first time I was there, I soon learned to navigate my away around, almost as if I’d been there before. It was uncanny, I felt so ‘at home’. I loved it, visited the bookshops, the market, Culpepers, Kings College Chapel, I had the most marvellous time, a very precious memory, even though I spent the entire day on my own, just soaking up the atmosphere. Of course, it helped that it was the most beautiful summer’s day!

Sounds like a highly successful day out, Elaine (apart from the drive home).

    Hurrah for Matty!
I see you’ve also recently re-read Westover – that’s one I don’t remember much about, and will reread. But Matty first.

Sounds like you had a wonderful time. I must try Richmal Crompton after your post the other day. I feel that there are some books you love I just know I will adore too. I am just about to watch Spooks on iPlayer for my sins. It is a sin but sometimes we need that, or is that just me.

Richard Armitage? Hmmm, that is quite reason enough.

Karen – it was a completely barmy episode tonight with the usual short sharp comments and remarks, meant to be really edgy but merely sounding silly. BUT Mr Armitage was brooding all over the place tonight, gazing through his eyelashes and going all introspective and best of all, we saw his bum tonight….Yes, true, now aren’t you glad I told you that!!!! Brought my day to a perfect close…

I envy you your day in Cambridge! As for Spooks (known as MI-5 in the U.S.), I lost interest somewhere about half way through the second series, but if Mr. Armitage is now in it, perhaps I should tune back in. : )
