After watching the match this afternoon, just thought I would drop round the back of the Centre Court and say hello to everyone…

Left to right: Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Rod Laver.

I was one of the first wave feminists in the 60s who demanded equality, burnt their bras (in my case, purely metaphorically, not with my boobs), and yet I really cannot support the equal pay structure at Wimbledon.  View the lack lustre, charmless, grunting and boring Ladies Final with what we saw today. Over four hours of superb tennis and even if I now find The Fed with his silly clothes a bit irritating, there is no denying this man is a supreme champion and thoroughly deserved his win.  Poor Andy Roddick though, I was rooting for him and felt so bad for him at the end.

So that is it for another year.   The papers have said that the UK is only interested in tennis during Wimbledon fortnight, but we might like it a bit more if all the majors and any others that are interesting, were not in the sole ownership of Sky or if the BBC bucked its ideas up a bit and made sure we had a bit more coverage of British tennis as well.  Yes, that might be pretty unexciting to start off with, but would give the players more exposure and might make them try a bit harder.

OK enough, better not start.

AND now for something completely different.  Click on this link and cop a load of this and my thanks to Julie on my reading group for sending this to us all.  Only knowing Dominic West from The Wire (which I have refrained from raving about up to now but will soon) and with an American accent, this is terrific.

I was also going to write about my opera visit last night but it was so STUPENDOUS and wonderful that I am saving it up for tomorrow.

Au reservoir.

I also wanted to thank you for the link to the fabulous coffee moments – they’re great to watch during my lunch break. I tried to watch The Wire, but unfortunately fell asleep during the first episode – but from what I saw, I guess I wasn’t the target audience anyway.

as an american i was of course unhappy that Roddick didnt win but i must say that it was a very hard match to watch as i adore Roger. He is simply the best tennis player ever. really.
you just have to look at the second set tie break to see his greatness – those are the moments that he won the match – he was down 62 and not only won the next FOUR points but then won the next one … at that point Andy looked shell shocked and it was the beginning of the end.
I do think that Andy played far and above his standard – its obvious that the work he has done this past year helped him – but in the end it was an historic day and an historic player deserved the victory.
and the clothes – well… no one is perfect.

There are several lovely coffee moments there. Greg Wise and “Tess” involve one as well.

I was also rooting for Roddick who was so graceful in his defeat. I hope he comes back next year.
Thank you for that coffee moment. Wonderful.

Until this year, I had always admired Roger’s classic taste in clothes; beautiful cream blazers and the like with few (or discreet) manufacturer’s logos. This year he looks like a bit player in Blake’s Seven.

I was rooting for Roddick too, poor bloke. All credit to him for his grace and charm in defeat even when you could see that he was heartbroken.
Someone really needs to have a word with Federer about those outfits and the gold bag….

If you’d been a first wave feminist, you’d have been out waving VOTES FOR WOMEN banners in the 1920s, and you look far far too youthful for that! That said, I tend to agree with your assessment of Wimbledon this year. :)

I feel sorry for Andy Roddick. If he had played in a different decade, he would now have a few Grand Slam titles.

It wasn’t until AFTER I had watched the entire 5 seasons of The Wire that I found out that Dominic West is English, so flawless was his Baltimore-Irish-American-cop accent. (THEN I found out that the Idris Elba, the actor who played Stringer Bell, is London born and bred!) Thanks for the Pride & Prejudice clip!
