Miss Pettigrew/Miss Boyle lives for a Day

When you read Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day by Winifred Watson your heart lifts when you know that all is going to end well for her.  It is Prince Charming rescuing Cinderella from a life of poverty and panic about a lonely future.  Now I am not saying Miss Susan Boyle is Miss Pettigrew but the Cinderella aspect of her story cannot  be ignored.

If there is anybody in the universe who has not yet seen this clip on You Tube from Britain's Got Talent, then I urge you to click onto the link below and watch it.  I have seen it several times and each time I find I get a lump in my throat at the sight of this very nice, but ordinary lady (I am sure she will forgive this description) walking onto the stage looking as unlike a diva as you could imagine, being greeted with disparagement by the judges and then opening her mouth, start to sing and knocking their socks off.  It is one of the most joyous things I have seen in a long time and the expression on the faces of Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan was a sight to behold.

    Last night I was channel hopping and chanced upon a summing up of the Glasgow Britain’s Got Talent and though I normally do not watch this program there was a man on it seeing how many Ferraro Rochers he could eat in a minute which was just so daft I watched it. Very glad I did as on came Susan and this time I was able to see the performance on my lovely wide screen TV with the sound turned up and I have to say it is even better than viewing it on You Tube. The sound she makes is simply stunning, Elaine Paige eat your heart out, and once again Simon Cowall’s eyebrows – wonderful.
    The response to this all overthe world, and just the comments on this post are really quite staggering. She seems to have touched a nerve in us all. Perhaps it is just the sight of somebody who seems by all accounts to be a genuinely nice, real person, one who looked after her mother and has not had much of a life, finally having her chance. It is lovely to see and also I find it wonderful that so many people are moved by her and wishing her well. Fingers crossed it does not go pear shaped and that the press do not start their usual build em up and knock em down blitz and start ferreting around for dark family secrets – as they always do

    Wow. I was probably one of the handful of people left who’d not seen this clip and I am so glad I did. It made my cry but in a very good way. Then I dragged in Mr B to have a look and it made him well up too. Thank you for posting it!

    Susan Boyle was the talk of the law firm where I work today, and her wonderful voice was sounding throughout the office through the day. I loved it!

    I’d not seen it or heard of it but her voice is astonishingly beatiful.
    I still think there’s something a little unpleasant about the tone of the show, though.

    I agree — the best part of the whole thing was seeing the looks of astonishment on the judges’ faces — as though someone who is not, let’s say, conventionally attractive couldn’t possibly be harboring any talent. (Although, frankly, there’s not much “wrong” with this lady’s appearance that couldn’t be improved simply by plucking her eyebrows and putting her in some good clothes.) Brava!

    I LOVED it when Simon’s eyebrows went up! My husband hung in there for 3 viewings of this and he NEVER watches or reads anything even twice!
