RANDOM JOTTINGS

A blog about music, sports, theatre and rants

Hardly Galsworthy, but  this saga has been rumbling on for weeks and weeks now and I fully intend to bore you and bring you up to date with the latest.

I am composing this post on my lovely new Dell laptop, very swish (mine has the green lid – did contemplate pink but thought perhaps that was a bit too girly), very fast and loads more memory.  I have had this laptop now for some two months and only now have I managed to get on line and then not the way I should.  So bear with me gentle reader and I will tell you all.

Having tried various modems to get on line and finding myself chatting to a very helpful young man in Inspiron1720_2 Boston (Mass not Lincs) which he assured me would not cost me much as I was on a UK line (HA!), he told me I had been sold the wrong modem.  Back to the shop breathing fire and brimstone and had it replaced.  Loaded it up successfully, drivers done success pat on back hooray hooray.

Well, I rejoiced too soon because up came the dreaded message ‘the modem is being blocked’

Back onto AOL help line (never has anything been more inaptly named), spoke to a very polite young man who was obviously based in India, (was very evasive when I tried to find out where he was talking from and how was the weather in Delhi), as I said most helpful and we tried everything and nothing worked.  He then transferred me to another colleague who told me he would send me a router ‘and that will solve the problem’.

It will be with me in five working days – two weeks later called them up.  Where was it? Turned out that they had sent it, for some reason which totally escapes me, to my old work address. Why? I shrieked I have never had anything sent there before.  Oh, they said could I go and collect it then?  You can imagine my response. After more shrieking and screaming they promised me they would send me out another one which they did and I came home and it was sitting outside my front door.  So much for secure delivery.  When I opened it up there was a CD, router etc and a little note saying ‘You will need your log in ID and password which has been sent to you in a separate letter before you can download this software’.

I went to bed.

Rang up next day, shrieked again (throat quite sore by now) and he gave me the relevant information. While I was on the phone I made him give me my MAC code as I am thinking of changing my ISP if this does not work.

Back home that evening set it all up and guess what? Yes you are right folks, ‘the modem is being blocked’  Back to the help line (heaven knows what my telephone bill is going to be like this quarter), more screaming and shrieking by me who has just about had enough.

And here is the bottom line – AOL and Vista, which is on all new computers, are INCOMPATIBLE.  I was told that they are receiving over 200 calls a day from users who have the same problem as me. 200 – I ask you. ‘But don’t worry madam I am going to sort this out for you now’ – I was then promptly cut off and left with a high pitched whirring sound.  By this time I had lost the will to live and went to bed.

In case you are wondering how I am on line, I discovered more by accident than design that I could get on line if I went through Internet Explorer and by passed my AOL log in completely.  I then did a Google search for AOL, marked it up as a favourite and now I am here.  The problem is still not solved and I have now had enough and am going to get another service provider.  Some kind person left a comment on my blog earlier and suggested I use Eclipse a UK based company and I have checked out their website and had a chat with them and they seem very helpful.  So enough is enough and will sort this out in the next month.

And let me make it clear, nobody but nobody at AOL told me that I could not get on line with a USB modem and that I needed a router. Nobody and I have been on the phone to them dozens of times.

I feel a Grumpy Old Woman of Colchester letter coming on to go with this rant.

It is all too much to bear.

AOL is a curse. My daughter put AIM (instant messaging by AOL) on this laptop and i think it’s killing the machine. it won’t stop popping up and cannot be extirpated.

What a nightmare Elaine. My husband has been on the phone recently with Ravi from India, who proceeded to try everything that my husband already tried, then told us he’d send the new equiptment, it would arrive in 5 business days..blah, blah, blah…cut to exactly 5 nights laters (NOT business days) and Ravi phones us IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT to see if part arrived. Very frightening, no one ever calls then. All sorted now, but quite frustrating at the time.

Fear not Sally – I will not hold you responsible, but quite frankly ANYBODY would be better than AOL with the problems I have had.

I hope Eclipse do you proud, Elaine. I’m nervous now. If you have trouble with them, I shall have to wear sackcloth and ashes.

Jan – are you hiding behind my curtains? that is just what I have done and am exporting emails and stuff there as I go. I have two weeks before I switch so I have been told so will spend the time wisely in between and get stuff shifted. It really concentrates the mind wonderfully on having to go through all the emails that one ends up hanging onto

You can set up an emergency yahoo email address for free, Elaine. It is web-based and as such is a useful storage device, I find.

Curzon – thanks for the tip. I am going to sort out my emails over the coming week before the new ISP kicks in. What makes me so cross is that on their FAQ page there is a whole paragraph about needing a router for Vista and yet NOBODY on their help line told me this. I am hoping all will be sorted out by the end of the month, August that is!

I too have suffered the fire and brimstone that is AOHELL. It is interesting how many troubleshooting FAQs on the Web have a question along the lines of “Are you on AOL?” It is a very invasive programme and will take some time to eradicate completely from your computer: I went through my folders and forwarded out many emails which I wanted to keep to my back-up edress before quitting, and exported my Addressbook as well. As you may imagine, once you have “left” AOL these things are impossible.

All new computers are now loaded with Vista and this seems to be causing a shedload of problems. Just hope your ISP isn’t AOL! I can access my emails via Internet explorer but because I am doing it in a round about way, the bulk of my emails are in another AOL box and I cannot get to them. I am going to have to contact them and see if they can help me access them somehow.
    Good luck!

I took delivery of the same product on Tuesday, by the looks of it. I was also tempted by the bubblegum pink but settled on red; because I’m Welsh and because the colour suits me! Not set it up yet as I’ve been avoiding sitting this week, due to falling on my backside last weekend. Not looking forward to this task even more after reading your trials… But will do so later next week. My service provider told me that all I needed to do was to plug it in and that “if you get any problems, call us”. I am, of course, expecting the latter scenario. I can’t believe that technology has reached the “plug and go” world for the Luddites yet!
I hope you get things resolved soon.

Oh, Elaine, i sympathize. i’ve been having internet woes galore. My “IP” address has been infiltrated by a worm, so have the time I have no “connectivity” — basically, cannot get to the Internet. I need a computer geek but hub insists HE can fix the laptop but only WHEN he has time. This is gonna take forever…..

I am thinking of setting up a self help group to cope with all this tress Compaid? CompsAnonymous?
I have done the deed and have started the move over to Eclipse which a visitor here recommended (I thnk it was Sally Z) and we shall see how that works. It is based in the UK which has to be plus for starters.

Well do I know how you are feeling. I’m back on line properly today for the first time in weeks and I have a view very similar to your about so called ‘helplines’. People can now leave comments on the blog again but only if you access it via web.me rather than web.mac. And I can now get mail out without two thirds of it being sent back to me. Letter follows shortly (Please don’t let those be famous last words!)

Harriet – today is Ditching Day!

I know many people who have had major problems with AOL — if I were you I would ditch them as soon as possible. I do sympathise with all this — it sounds absolutely appalling.
